Today happens to be my favorite holiday of the year. That’s right, May the 4th, Star Wars Day, IS in fact a holiday (in my opinion anyways). Star Wars has always been part of my life. I remember watching the movies on VHS tapes as a child (most teens today have never even SEEN a VHS tape), and this was back when the movie we all know as “A New Hope” was just titled “Star Wars”. I had Star Wars toys when I was young. I have always loved Star Wars.
When I am asked why I love Star Wars I usually give a range of answers from, “I’ve just always enjoyed them” to “they are just the best movies ever made!” But the truth is a lot deeper than I ever really explain. You see Star Wars is an epic tale about Good versus Evil. The light side are the good guys, the dark side are the bad guys, Luke is good, Vader is evil. Who doesn’t like a story where good triumphs over evil?
But more than that, it is a story of redemption. The original trilogy ends with Vader, the bad guy, turning back to the light side and saving his son from the really bad guy. That isn’t even the only story arc of redemption in Star Wars! There is the story of Han Solo and Lando. These are the stories that I like the most because these stories tell us that it’s never too late to turn back to the light.
In the same way we see stories of Redemption throughout Christianity. Paul’s story is an incredible redemption story, but Peter also has a wonderful story of redemption. In fact, we all have a wonderful story of redemption! We were lost and God sent His Son to find us and to give His life so that we could have life eternal.
The Star Wars saga might be the best movies ever made, but the greatest story ever told, the greatest thing to ever happen, was Jesus coming to die for our sins to redeem humanity to God.
