Have I done enough? Been good enough? Given enough? Evangelized… served…. taught…. prayed…. enough? Enough? Have you ever had this nagging question robbing your peace of mind?
Where does this come from? Certainly not from God’s Word! In fact, as you study God’s word, the argument it makes is that Jesus is enough! He is the perfect sacrifice. Scripture uses that great theological term “propitiation.” The complete satisfaction. Jesus meets every requirement on our behalf. Passages like Ephesians 1 or 1 John 1-2 which are perfectly reflected in Colossians, Hebrews and so many other places put the entire emphasis of our salvation on Jesus. It’s never based on us being enough, but we rejoice that He is!
Salvation is based on His perfection, not ours. The old classic question “if you were to die tonight what would you say to God to convince Him to let you in?” If your answer begins with the pronoun “I” you’re in trouble! If it’s an effort to convince God that somehow you have been “good” enough you’re wasting your time. Our only hope is that Jesus is enough. That His blood has been sufficient. That He is faithful and righteous to forgive us of all our sin (1 Jn. 1:9). My hope is built on nothing less (or more) than Jesus’ blood and His righteousness.
Not only is it a waste of time to try to convince God (or us) that we’ve done enough, it creates fear. Too many Christians have missed this key aspect of Christianity and live in crippling fear of judgement. Understanding the love of God casts out our fears (1 Jn. 4:15-19). We must put our complete trust and hope into the steadfast love of the Lord that never ceases. His mercy never comes to an end.
He is enough!!!
