A New Heart

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ez. 36:26). God gives us a new heart. We are born again with a new heart (Jn. 3). The heart is the seat of affections. What we love and hate. It’s the way we view life. It’s a new world view. God gives us a new “mindset” (Col. 3:1-5; Rom. 8:5-8). It’s a new way of thinking.

The old heart was self-focused. We have been the center of our universe. Our own Lord. It was selfish. Self-centered. Constantly focused inwardly. No wonder we were so anxious. How do you do the loving thing with a selfish heart.

The old heart is a hard heart. It’s hardened against God and the ways of God. If you asked a hard heart if it is bad, it becomes offended. It points out all the good it has done. It points out how friends, neighbors and those at the church are much worse. It doesn’t care.

God gives us a new way of looking at life! It’s more than giving up bad habits or learning new behaviors. It’s much deeper than all that. It’s the way we look at the world. The way we look at life. The way we look at God. Our life reflects our world view. It’s a total focus on God. We want to obey. We want to love and be like Jesus.

A new heart gives us a new perspective. It allows us to look at life with new eyes. We are redeemed! Our sins have been forgiven. Our guilt has been removed. Our shame has been covered by the blood of Jesus!

A new heart gives us a new way to interpret life. It allows us to lift up our head and see the big picture. It allows us to keep our balance, no matter what life throws at us. We see God and know we can trust in Him.
