The Encourager

Do you ever get discouraged? (of course you do). The deadliest disease is not heart disease, or cancer or stroke – It’s discouragement. It’s universal, everyone gets it. It’s recurring. It’s contagious. Too often we’re carriers. We discourage one another. We concentrate on people’s weaknesses. We criticize instead of complimenting. We tear down instead of building up. Discouragement is a killer.

God is the great encourager! Jesus said, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever” (Jn. 14:16). He will send a “helper.” In the margin of the NASV, it says “or Paracletos, one called alongside to help; or Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor.” Gene Getz writes, “The important correlation here is that the Greek verb, parakaleo is frequently translated “to encourage.” Therefore, it would seem appropriate to identify the Holy Spirit in this passage as “another Encourager” (Encouraging One Another). God, the Holy Spirit, is the encourager.

There are two extreme approaches to the Holy Spirit. One is completely academic. Since the Holy Spirit revealed Truth and inspired some to write it down, some conclude that the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are the same. On the other extreme, the Holy Spirit is seen in a completely emotional way. These folks attribute various experiences and emotional feelings to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit isn’t found at the end of some syllogism and he’s not filling us with religious experiences that contradict the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is God abiding in us and working in our lives. The main job of the Holy Spirit is to point us to Jesus.

The Holy Spirit wants us to use what He’s revealed to us in Scripture to encourage one another. In God’s Word we discover God’s plan, His love, His concern and His promises to us. God has filled us with insight into how to encourage one another through His Word.

We need encouragers! We must build up one another. God calls us to be encouragers.
