Happy New Year

Today we begin a new year. That’s 12 new chapters in our lives, 365 pages. How will you use this time? Will you be making some resolutions? Where are you in your life, is it time to set some new goals?

Some of you will plan to go on a diet (again). Do you plan to exercise more (again)? Is this the year you plan to get in shape (again)? Maybe, you’ll take better care of your finances and determine to stick with your budget (again). Maybe you’ll resolve to break that terrible bad habit or addiction (again). All these goals are good and worthwhile, but they seem to emphasize those external parts of our lives. What about taking some time to work on what’s on the inside? Our attitude is far more important than our appearance. Many are more concerned with what other people think we are, than working on who we are.

Paul reminded Timothy that “bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Tim. 4:8).

As I wrote this article thinking of the Scriptures that gave admonitions that I’d do well to devote myself to again, I ran out of space. I had to start over and figure out how to delete the long list of Scriptures I had made and reduce it down to just a few.

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you” (Col. 3:16). Meditating on God’s Word can only cause our hearts to be more focused.

Stop worrying about your life! (Mt. 6:25). Stop worrying about the future (Mt. 6:34). Don’t waste your time on things you can’t control.

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice” (Eph. 4:31). Resolve to move on! Do you need to forgive? Then let go and forgive. Do you spend time feeling sorry for yourself or your circumstances? Don’t waste your time, move on!

Every page of Scripture seems to remind us that we need to be more resolved. Let us call on God to help us to have purer hearts and to prepare our souls for that day we will meet Him when He judges the Universe!
