Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Eve wasn’t given this name because she was made just before dark. Adam gave her this name “because she was the mother of all the living” (Gen. 3:20). Eve means “life” or “life-giving,” or “mother of all who have life,” and her life is in us all.

Eve differs from all other women in the world only because she is the only one who never had a mother. She was first. She was the first wife. She was the first to deal with the pain of childbirth. She was the first to deal with the shame and guilt of sin. She was the first to deal with the death of a child. She was the first to have a murderer for a son. She did all this without having a mother of her own to turn to for strength and guidance.

Eve was God’s answer to man’s loneliness. He said “I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Gen. 2). “Helper” has led to the idea of the “little woman.” Someone who is weak. The word “helper” is from the Hebrew word Ezer. It’s found about 21 times in the OT and usually refers to someone stronger (Deut. 33:7, 26; 33:20, etc.). Often it’s used to refer to God himself. In explaining the name of Moses’ son it says, “The other was named Eliezer, for he said, “The God of my father was my help (ezer), and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh” (Ex. 18:4). The Psalmist says, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help (ezer) in trouble” (Ps. 46:1). No one ever thinks of God as a “little helper.” He is our shield and deliverer. He is always stronger than us. He is the One in whom we can always depend. This should shade our understanding of a “helper.” Women are strong. Mothers have to be strong.

“Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her” (Prov. 31:28). Mothers deserve our respect and honor (Eph. 6:2; 1 Pet. 3:7). Peter says that we are to treat our wives as a “weaker vessel” (1 Pet. 3:7). This is why men open doors, and let the ladies go first, and show politeness toward women. Not because they are too weak to do this on their own, but to show that we are gentlemen who understand and acknowledge the elevated place women deserve.
