Patience, Perseverance, Endurance

Words that are alike. Similar, but different. These are elusive virtues.

Patience (makrothumia). This word describes calmness in the face of difficult circumstances. It is the capacity to be wronged and not retaliate. It is a word that describes God’s patience toward sinners and one that Christians are called to emulate. “Love is patient.” It “describes manifesting a state of emotional calm or quietness in the face of provocation, misfortune or unfavorable circumstances. Love never says, 'I’ve had enough.' It suffers indefinitely. It is longsuffering and continues in spite of conduct likely to quench it. This continuance often, but not always, shows itself in restraining anger.”

Perseverance (hupomone). Perseverance is a wonderful virtue! It is not a “grin and bear” attitude. It is a spirit of triumph when facing difficult circumstances knowing that God can work it for good. It is a word for the courageous, who no matter the trial, the temptation or hardship, believe they will conquer. It turns the blows of life into stepping stones. It is the attitude that the bumps of life are what you climb on.

Endurance (proskarteresis). This word describes someone who continues with intense effort, no matter what the difficulties. It pictures someone who keeps on. It describes a Christian’s prayers that never stop no matter how impossible the task may seem. A truck delivered a ton of coal on the sidewalk in front of a house. The little girl who lived there took her small shovel and began to carry the coal into the basement. A neighbor told her “you’ll never be able to get it all in” to which she replied, “oh, I will, if I work long enough.”

The test of a person’s character is what it takes to stop him. Some people stop just as soon as the going gets rough. Some retreat as soon as the first shot is fired. How easy is it for Satan to discourage you and tempt you to give up on someone or quit? Be patient and stay calm. Persevere, you know that with God’s help you will be victorious. Endure one step after another. Fight every battle. Never give up. Be patient, persevere, endure.
